Why I Chose To Become an SLP instead of a Teacher

Hi speechies!

An FAQ that I get is "Why did you choose to become a speech-language pathologist instead of a teacher?"

I went through a phase where I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. I enrolled in a post-bachelor's degree program that certified people to become teachers who were considered "out of field" which required me to do some classroom observation.

HOLY MOLY.

The classroom observation is what scared me away from the profession. HEAR ME OUT. There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING wrong with teaching. I freaking love teachers. They are rockstars in my book.

It's just not something that I think I would be good at to be honest.

The biggest thing that drew me to SLP over teaching is how much more niched it is. The thought of being potentially responsible for teaching a kid math, science, reading, spelling, writing, social studies, etc. was enough to make me curl up into the fetal position.

As an SLP, my focus will be on speech and language...that I can handle.

Another reason why I opted for the SLP route is because I prefer to work with people one on one or in small groups. I used to be a personal trainer and I taught whole group classes (30-50 people), smaller boot camp classes (5-10 people), and I did one on one training. This experience taught me that I am better at working with smaller groups as opposed to larger ones. As an SLP, I work with clients one on one or in small groups so it is a good fit for me.

While the field of speech-language pathology is niched, it is also extremely diverse. Once I finish my degree, I will be able to work in a school, a hospital, a nursing home, a private clinic, etc. There are so many options as an SLP and that is extremely appealing to me.

I think that both fields are respectable and both need passionate people who genuinely love people in them.
