About

Hello and welcome to The Social Speechie! My name is Jessica, and I am a speech-language pathology graduate student and a previous speech-language pathology assistant. TSS is a place for speech-language pathologists, speech-language pathology assistants, and speech-language pathology grad students to connect + collaborate.

I'll mostly be sharing my grad school tips + experiences but I'll also share any therapy materials + resources that I create!

A little bit about me:

Education:

I graduated from the University of South Florida (USF) in 2012 with a B.A. in Mass Communications. Post-graduation, I became a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer. I took a few years to do some soul searching and found speech-language pathology (or maybe it found me ðŸ˜‰). I spent a few months shadowing local SLPs before deciding to pursue a second bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2015. I graduated with a B.A. in CSD from USF in 2017.

After a lot of thought and consideration, I decided to pursue my graduate education at Florida State University (FSU). I started the program in August 2017, and I am thrilled to be a Nole! I chose to do the part-time distance program. The program takes 3 years to complete, and I will be able to work simultaneously throughout the duration of most of the program. Which brings us to...

Work:

In August 2017, I started working at a small, non-profit school that serves students with a variety of learning challenges as a P.E. teacher and then in October I moved into my SLPA position. These new opportunities both challenged and pushed me, but I'm a big believer that you learn best by doing!

The SLP who I worked for practices pediatric animal assisted speech therapy. She works with a facility dog (pictured with me above) to deliver therapy to her clients/students.

My goal is to one day become a pediatric CCC-SLP who practices animal assisted speech therapy. I'm looking forward to sharing my journey of achieving that goal right here on this blog!

As of the 2018-2019 academic year, I will no longer be working at the school, because in summer 2017, I started my clinical practicum hours for grad school. I will be on site at various locations (private practice summer 2018, public school fall 2018-spring 2019, etc.) earning hours toward graduation. I will continue working on my YouTube channel, Etsy shop, and TpT store. I also do the billing (remotely) for a commerical A/C company.

I share weekly vlogs over on YouTube to give you a glimpse into what it's like to be an SLP graduate student! Come check me out on YouTube to see me in action!

Personal Life:

I'm a wife to my high school sweetheart, Adam, and a dog mama to my 2 sweet pups, Buck and Harley. We live in Tampa, Florida and I absolutely adore my city! We love spending our free time exploring new restaurants and coffee shops. My hobbies include working out, hand lettering, crafting, making our home as cozy as possible, reading, and cruising around in my white Jeep. I'm a health + wellness enthusiast who loves putting together delicious recipes and growing my yoga practice. You can find me on my personal website here!
